PDLC Project Planning Guide


The table below captures some of the project planning activities that should be considered at different stages of the Product Development Life Cycle. At the moment, it concentrates heavily on the formal PMI link to product development. I will later add a list that includes additional details of engineering and release to manufacturing tasks that should be performed at each stage.

Engineering is to perform the work according to the project plan. Using the schedule, likely some rolling wave planning, good requirements and WBS, the engineers will design and deliver an Alpha build and early Beta builds. Earned value management is a great tool to track and report project performance during Execution. The manufacturing and Manufacturing Engineering teams will work closely with Engineering. Ensure an excellent system of communication is in place starting at the planning stages to ensure a smooth product release.
